Life

The first Tuesday of the month means it was writer’s group time — lots of fun and I somehow managed to buy a pint for less than a fiver, which is just unheard of these days. It also turns out that one of the other writers used to vacation in Ëlwen as a child, which is definitely the most unique place I’ve ever had anyone here tell me about knowing in Luxembourg.

On Saturday, I skipped the farmer’s market because the weather was gross and instead I went to Lidl for their bakery section. It was the first time in years I’ve had a Berliner because you really can’t get those anywhere apart from Lidl, which I basically never go to. (Side note, I miss Streiselkuch.)

In the afternoon, I went to an art market at Arthole. It used to be a tiny shop in town, but they recently moved into a much bigger space that’s also enabled them to have artist studios on site. I bought a couple of prints from Beastly Worlds and she gave me a couple of postcards for free when I mentioned already owning one of her other pieces, which was super sweet. (I will be buying more of her art in future.)

Entertainment

This current season of Taskmaster just keeps getting better. I think this may be my favourite line-up ever. Stevie Martin’s doing a show in Cardiff later this year and I’m very tempted to buy tickets.

The Phoenician Scheme is the most Wes Anderson film I’ve ever seen. A particular highlight: Tom Hanks and Brian Cranston playing basketball in a train tunnel. Also, Michael Cera really hit that weird note in a way that only Michael Cera can.

I also finished the second season of Zeenewiessel and damn, the finance director really did not get any less suspicious as the story unfolded. I wonder if we’ll ever find out what really happened.

The world of Dropout feels a little like being a Harry Potter fan before J. K. Rowling got Twitter.

This is a really cool deep dive into the history of Dropout and an insight into who Sam Reich is. I’m also here for all the David Zaslav hate in the story. Zaslav being the man whose decision to rebrand HBO Max to Max to HBO Max was perhaps best summed up by one PR consultant as “every neon ‘Max’ banner hangs like a scarlet letter of incompetence”.

I almost wish this article on the difference between being useful and being valued had been published a year ago (although by June last year I was already doing job interviews anyway). I’m bookmarking this one for future reference.
