Things that brought me joy (4)

Past Lives is a film about two childhood friends, separated when one of them moved from South Korea to the US, reconnect as adults. If you’ve ever lived in another country, this film will hit you like a ton of bricks — it really gets what it means to be a migrant and to leave one life behind for another (it even references losing touch with your mother tongue).

The Whistlers is one of those films I started watching on a whim because the premise is unique: a crooked police officer learns Silbo Gomero (a real-life whistling language) to help break out a criminal from police custody. It’s a neo noir at its finest, the language makes this very interesting (if anything, I wish it had used the language more) and I learned that I’ve slept on Romanian cinema for far too long.

Biester is an Austrian drama centred around a ridiculously wealthy family who seem to be getting away with everything (even nearly killing one of their own workers). But not all is as it seems, and the titular “Biester” are actually made up of the two daughters of the rich family and two from a poor background, who are all ruthless in their own ways. There’s more twists in this than in some soap operas, but they’re all fun, some of them are very unpredictable and Ursula Strauss delivers a real tour-de-force performance as the matriach.

Who shat on the floor at my wedding? is probably not the kind of question a bride wants to find herself asking, but it’s exactly what happened to Karen Whitehouse and Helen McLaughlin at their wedding party in 2018. That celebration happened on a boat, so they know it wasn’t a random stranger who crashed the party. They have their suspects — from invited guests to staff. The podcast goes from serious sleuthing to hilariously over-the-top interrogation scenes, and will keep you guessing to the very end. Listen to this and then help me create a campaign to give Henk a spinoff show.
